DAILY BACKUP TAPES PROCEDURAL GUIDE

A complete backup of the computer should be made at the close of business each day. A system for storing and reusing FILE-SAVE tapes should be maintained.

Daily backups are the insurance policy for your computer data. The FILE-SAVE will save all programs on the computer, so there is no need for individual departmental saves except for special circumstances. The most recent file-save should be kept in an off-site location. A separate building or bank deposit box can be used, or by bringing the tape home.

It is recommended that file-saves for one week be kept in a safe place before reuse. In addition, weekly saves for one month should be kept. The following schedule of tapes should be used:

Monday tape
Reuse each week
Tuesday tape
Reuse each week
Wednesday tape
Reuse each week
Thursday tape
Reuse each week
Friday #1 tape
Use for 1st week of the month, reuse monthly
Friday #2 tape
Use for 2nd week of the month, reuse monthly
Friday #3 tape
Use for 3rd week of the month, reuse monthly
Friday #4 tape
Use for 4th week of the month, reuse monthly
Friday #5 tape
Use for 5th week of the month, reuse monthly
Saturday tape
Reuse each week (optional, based on activity)
Sunday tape
Reuse each week (optional, based on activity)

The above tapes should be clearly labeled on both the container and tape. Additionally, the date of the most recent file-save should be listed and changed with each reuse.

If a second or third tape is required for each day, be sure that the order of the tapes (Tape 1 of 2, Tape 2 of 2) is also clearly marked on the container and on the tape.
